Manchester Utd – Everton Prediction and Preview

  • Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s insistence that the gap between his side and arch-rivals Manchester City is “not that big” will have done nothing to reassure the club’s supporters after the Red Devils suffered a 3-1 defeat in the derby last weekend. That proved to be the first time that they’ve been beaten in the Premier League when leading at half-time since September 2014 (143 matches), with the result leaving United 11 points adrift of the top-four and needing a dramatic turnaround to salvage their season.
  • But with Aston Villa and Tottenham – the two sides immediately above them – facing off this weekend, United have the chance to close the gap as they welcome Everton to Old Trafford. Four consecutive H2H victories under Ten Hag, scoring 2+ goals in each, should offer hope that they can get back on the winning trail, but any defeat would leave the Dutchman sweating as a loss would be their 12th of the league season, with United only twice before in the Premier League era suffering that many in a single campaign.
  • Another manager under pressure is Sean Dyche, who saw his side squander a lead for the second successive week in a 3-1 loss to West Ham. Alarmingly, Everton have now failed to win any of their last ten league matches (D5, L5), leaving Dyche to demand his squad take “some responsibility” for their failures in front of goal which have seen them slide further towards the relegation spots.
  • This season, only the bottom-two sides have scored fewer than the Toffees’ 29, while they’re also comfortably the side who’ve underperformed their seasonal xG (41.5) by the biggest margin. Stopping that rot on the road looks a task beyond Everton at present, as across their last five away league outings (D2, L3), they’ve netted just twice.
  • Players to watch: Alejandro Garnacho has started each of United’s last 24 matches, a sequence that includes November’s reverse fixture in which the Argentina international scored a sensational overhead kick. While he may have missed a penalty against West Ham, Beto did find the net after the break – all four of his Everton goals have come in the second-half of matches.
  • Hot streak: Each of Everton’s last four matches have been goalless at half-time.
