AZ Alkmaar – Excelsior Prediction and Preview

  • Despite the very inconsistent form in recent months, AZ Alkmaar will be determined not to hand over fourth place to Ajax, who currently have four points fewer. With eight points from their last four matches, AZ have been doing well in recent weeks under club icon Maarten Martens. The wing attackers still aren’t producing the desired return, but with talented teenagers such as Ruben van Bommel and Jayden Addai, it is likely to only be a matter of time before they also make a significant contribution.
  • Van Bommel recently managed to claim a leading role by scoring both goals in the 2-0 win over Ajax and he has regularly returned to the starting team as a left winger in recent weeks. Midfielder Sven Mijnans has been covering the right flank in recent weeks, while Kristijan Belic and Wouter Goes also seem to have definitively entered the starting line-up under the new coach. The 18-year-old Goes is keeping 36-time Dutch international and captain Bruno Martins Indi on the bench.
  • After five consecutive defeats, Excelsior Rotterdam are still barely above the relegation zone and even lost 5-2 to Fortuna Sittard last week. The Kralingers gave low-flying Vitesse their first league victory of 2024 the week before, which is adding to the underlying tension every week for the team that lost only once in their first eight competitive games of this year.
  • Excelsior scored almost double the number of goals of their competitors in the lower regions of the table, but failed to keep their goal clean in 18 of their last 19 matches in all competitions. With 15 different goalscorers, there is no shortage of scoring potential up forward, but goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel has had to fish at least two balls out of the net in his last five matches, so there is still plenty to improve defensively.
  • Players to watch: Sven Mijnans made his starting debut at AZ more than a year ago with two goals and an assist against Excelsior. In the previous head-to-head, he again produced a decisive pass. For the visitors, Lance Duijvestijn was involved in a goal in his first three starts for Excelsior (G2, A1).
  • Hot stat: Excelsior has conceded at least two goals in their last eight Eredivisie away games in the Eredivisie, but also scored in all of those matches.
