Armenia can take some positives from losing by a mere one-goal margin away to Bosnia in their opening qualifier for Euro 2020. With home advantage, and the presence of opposition drawn from pot three (one lower than Bosnia), Armenia will believe that they can build on their UEFA Nations League (UNL) home performances (W2, L1).
However, the hosts’ last set of qualifiers for a major tournament (World Cup 2018) saw them concede 4+ goals in each of their home matches against teams drawn from pots 1-3. They lost both halves on each occasion, and failed to score at all in the second half of those games.
Opening Euro 2020 qualification with a predictable 2-0 defeat in Udine, Finland travel again after being involved in four competitive away matches in a row where one team has won with a clean sheet, and by a margin of under 2.5 goals (W1, L3).
However, each of Finland’s last 11 games (all venues, including all friendlies) have seen both teams fail to score more than twice over the course of 90 minutes. In turn, ten of those 11 matches have produced under 2.5 match goals in total.
Players to watch: After netting a consolation from the penalty spot in Bosnia, Armenian all-star Henrikh Mkhitaryan has now scored his last two international goals beyond the 89th minute.
Having failed to replicate his club form in the opening set of qualifiers, Teemu Pukki remains the last man to score a competitive away goal for Finland.
Stat attack: Both of Armenia’s two UNL home victories saw them win the second half to nil.
Each of Finland’s last five competitive away defeats have also seen them lose the first half.
However, three of the nations’ four total H2H meetings have seen Finland win after winning the first half.
