Match Preview

Having just suffered their worst top-flight defeat since being promoted to the Premier League (PL) in 2016/17 (0-5); Brighton welcome fellow strugglers Cardiff for a game which is a must-win for both sides. The hosts will be the favourites however, as they are undefeated in eight of the last nine home league H2Hs (W5, D3, L1).
The ‘Seagulls’ are yet to lose at home to newly-promoted sides since their return to the top-flight (W2, D2), and have lost just twice across the last 15 such encounters at home (W7, D6, L2).
It could be a slow start judging by both sides home and away league records in the first half however, as Brighton have seen a goalless first half in over a third of their home PL matches this season (37.5%), whilst Cardiff have played out a goalless first half in 43.75% of their away matches this term.
Cardiff manager Neil Warnock is unbeaten in five of his last six managerial clashes with Brighton (W3, D2, L1), although he has beaten his opposite number, Chris Hughton, just once. Warnock may be in for another long afternoon however, as Cardiff are the lowest PL scorers away from home (0.56 per match average) – losing by a 2-0 scoreline in each of their last three such matches.
Players to watch: Striker Glenn Murray is the top scorer in the PL for the hosts (11), whilst Kenneth Zohore scored Cardiff’s last away goal; directly preceding 270 minutes before this game without a goal on the road.
Stat attack: Chris Hughton has seen his side on the day keep a clean sheet in five of his last six touchline encounters with Neil Warnock (W4, D1, L1).
Cardiff have never equalised after going behind 12 times away from home this season (PL).
Eight of Cardiff’s nine away league goals this season have come in the second half (seven between the 76th-90th+ minute).
