Match Preview

Albania’s 1-0 defeat away to Iceland on Saturday was their second defeat ‘to nil’ this European Championship qualifying campaign (ECQ), and their ninth game in a row where only one team, or no team, scored. The ‘Eagles’ did win their matchday two fixture against Andorra 3-0 though, continuing a trend that has seen Albania’s last five competitive victories come ‘to nil’.
Continuing that theme, the hosts’ last seven competitive home games have also seen just one side score (W2, L5), with four of those matches goalless at half-time. Although notably, the eventual winner in each of Albania’s three ECQ fixtures this campaign were winning 1-0 at the break.
Moldova secured their first win of the campaign with a 1-0 result against minnows Andorra. That was only their fifth win in their last 50 matches, and whilst all those victories came ‘to nil’ they were either against previous opponents Andorra, or FIFA’s lowest ranked nation San Marino.
Unsurprisingly then, the visitors have lost ‘to nil’ in their previous three ECQ away defeats, trailing at half-time in their last two. However, it’s not all doom and gloom, Moldova’s two ECQ road trips prior saw them launch a comeback to pick up a point after conceding the opener.
Players to watch: The last five international games Armando Sadiku (ALB) has scored in, he got the match opener.
Similarly, joint-top scorer in the Moldova squad, Radu Gînsari (seven goals), has scored his nation’s first goal in all six international games he has netted in.
Stat attack: The match opener has been scored on either the 21st or 22nd minute in each of Albania’s last three games.
Moldova’s last seven competitive away defeats have come by a two-goal margin or larger.
Albania are unbeaten in all three previous H2Hs (W2, D1), drawing at half-time in two, and netting exactly three goals in both wins.
