Match Preview

The penultimate quarter-final match of the Women’s World Cup (WC) sees the first-ever WC meeting between Italy (FIFA rank: #15) and the Netherlands (#8). However, the ‘Azzurre’ are winless against the ‘Oranje’ in the last four meetings in all competitions (D2, L2); all of which saw both teams find the net.
In Italy’s only prior appearance at this stage of the WC, they lost 3-2 to Norway who went on to finish as runners-up. However, Italy have been a free-scoring side in this campaign, scoring at least twice in each of their three victories (W3, L1 – 2.25 goals p/match average). Notably, two thirds of Italy’s WC goals this year have come after half-time.
The Netherlands can become just the third side to achieve victory over nations from five confederations in a single WC campaign with victory here. They have already dispatched OFC, CAF, CONCACAF and AFC opposition; albeit three of the wins were by a single-goal margin only.
The Netherlands have opened the scoring only to concede an equaliser in each of their last three WC matches, twice within ten minutes of them scoring. This directly follows a previous run of four games winning ‘to nil’.
Players to watch: Italy’s Manuela Guigliano leads the way with three assists from just six chances created, whilst Aurora Galli (ITA) has scored three of her country’s last four WC goals.
Netherlands and Barcelona star Lieke Martens scored either side of half-time to see them through to this stage for the first time. She also scored 11 goals in 23 appearances in the Primera division last season.
Stat attack: Italy have scored nine goals from 46 attempts (19.56%) at this WC.
Italy were winning at half-time in three of the last four H2Hs (W3, L1), despite winning none.
Five of the Netherlands’ last six matches have seen over 2.5 total goals.
