West Ham ended last season with three straight wins to nail a top-half finish, but must start the new campaign against reigning champions Manchester City – a team the ‘Hammers’ have lost seven consecutive H2Hs against (all competitions), conceding over 3.5 goals in four of those games.
Delivering action from the get-go, four of West Ham’s opening five Premier League (PL) matches last season featured three goals or more. Furthermore, 58.33% of the goals in their previous seven top-flight home matches arrived before the break, with all of those games featuring at least one first-half goal, and five of them witnessing at least two.
Fresh from winning the Community Shield, Manchester City are aiming for their third straight PL title. The ‘Sky Blues’ ended last season with 14 straight wins, nine of which were by at least a two-goal margin, and ten were ‘to nil’.
Additionally, City have won their last eight opening season games, scoring at least two goals in each. A winning margin of two or more goals was recorded in six of those eight opening matches, including all four that were away from home. Indeed City have not conceded a single goal in any of the four opening matches that were played away during this period, winning three by the same 2-0 scoreline.
Players to watch: New signing Sébastien Haller (WHU) scored 15 Bundesliga goals for Eintracht Frankfurt last season – 80% of those arrived in the second half!
Raheem Sterling (MCY), meanwhile, has scored three goals and assisted five across the last six top-flight H2Hs.
Stat attack: Eight of the last nine competitive H2Hs ended with over 2.5 goals.
West Ham have been shown just one yellow card on average per fixture across their last four matches against City.
City were in front at half-time a league-high 12 times away from home last season, and 25 times in total.
