Match Preview
Nice will hope to remain in the top half of the table, while high-flying Nantes will be hoping to close the gap on the European qualification places this round.
In 36 previous meetings at the Allianz Riviera in their Ligue 1 (L1) history, Nice have won 13, Nantes have won seven and the other 16 games were drawn. Furthermore, coach Claudio Ranieri’s team are unbeaten at home in nine of their last ten L1 clashes against Nantes (W3, D6, L1).
Currently on a downward spiral, Nice have lost their last three league games against Metz (2-1), Toulouse (0-1) and Dijon last weekend (3-2). After slipping to eighth place in the L1 standings, Lucien Favre and his team also lost 3-2 at home to Lokomotiv Moscow in the Europa League earlier this week – and after taking a 2-0 lead!
After the 3-2 defeat at Caen in round 24, Nantes failed to build on the result and then fell to a 2-2 draw against the struggling Lille last Sunday. Still fifth in the league standings ahead of the round, Ranieri’s side only have a single point advantage over Montpellier (sixth).
Players to watch: Nice’s best player so far this season has been Mario Balotelli who has 13 goals in L1. The 27-year-old Italian has found the net 13 times in his last 14 matches in all competitions!
Nantes striker Emiliano Sala has been directly involved in half of his team’s 26 goals. Indeed, the Argentinian has a record of ten goals and three assists in the top flight so far this season.
Stat attack: Nice have been drawing at half-time and losing at full-time in their last three league fixtures. What’s more, they have not drawn a single match in their last 14 matches at home in all competitions (W7, L7).
Nantes have scored at least two goals in three of their last four away games in all competitions. Moreover, the Canaries have scored at least one goal in each of their last five clashes against their hosts.
