Match Preview

As of the date of this match, it’s been seven years, five months and 21 days since Everton last savoured victory in the Merseyside derby, when strikes from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta swept the Reds aside.
By a quirk of the fixture computer, this is only the second occasion in 15 seasons that Goodison has hosted the second derby of the season. The 1987-88 season remains the last time Everton won a return derby match in a season.
After beating Everton in January’s third round FA Cup tie, Liverpool set a new record for unbeaten derbies (16). Liverpool have scored first in seven of the last eight league meetings at Goodison Park NOT to end goalless. Of those seven games, four have resulted in a Liverpool victory.
If Liverpool score first, Everton might as well give up. The blue half of Merseyside have not come from behind to win a derby since December 1992. Liverpool, meanwhile, have achieved that feat three times in the interim, having not conceded first in a game against Everton since April 2012.
Since they last beat Liverpool, Everton have taken just four points from a possible 24 (W0, D4, L2) in Goodison derbies. As if the blue half of a football-mad city needed to be more depressed, Everton have beaten Liverpool at Goodison just three times since the start of the 21st century.
Players to watchSeamus Coleman and Phil Jagielka are the only surviving members of the squad from Everton’s last win over Liverpool. The latter made headlines back in September 2014 with a stunning goal on the other side of Stanley Park.
Attacking midfielder Mo Salah (currently on 28 Premier League goals) will be one to watch today. He scored in the reverse fixture, as Everton clung on to a 1-1 draw in Sam Allardyce’s second game as Everton manager.
Stat attack: Everton and Liverpool have gone six and three derbies, respectively, without a clean sheet.
Expect the same – 13 out of Everton’s last 17 games have produced over 2.5 goals and/or seen both teams score.
