Match Preview

In their last pre-World Cup (WC) friendly encounter, five-time WC winners Brazil face in-form Austria at the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna. After failing to qualify for the WC for the fifth time in a row, the Austrians will hope to extend their impressive winning streak to eight.
As a result of a disappointing 2018 WC qualification campaign (W4, D3, L3), the Austrians finished fourth in WC qualifying Group D. After a surprise 1-1 draw against Georgia at home back in September, Franco Foda’s men reacted superbly with eight straight wins, including a great friendly performance in overturning Germany 2-1 at home last weekend.
After finishing top of the CONMEBOL qualifying Group, Brazil are one of the favourites to win the WC. Moreover, Tite’s side come into this one on the back of a great sequence of results, consisting of an important 1-0 away win against Germany before recording their third straight friendly success against Croatia (2-0) at Anfield last Sunday.
In nine previous meetings with Brazil in all competitions, Austria have a dreadful record that currently stands at: W0, D3, L6, and have a negative H2H goal difference of minus nine (GF5, GA14). Having never lost a single clash against Austria, the visitors have the added luxury of having the psychological advantage.
Players to watch: Austria’s best player in the 2018 WC qualifiers was Marko Arnautović with four goals and three assists.
Star striker Neymar is the fourth-top scorer in the Brazilian national team’s history with 54 goals.
Stat attack: The Austrians have lost only one of their last eight friendly fixtures (W5, D2, L1), scoring at least two goals in half of them.
Brazil have won 14 of their last 15 away friendly games (W14, D1), scoring at least two goals in twelve them.
Overall, six of the last seven clashes between the two sides have produced less than 2.5 goals (total).
