The third Group B match of the 2018 World Cup (WC) sees Portugal and bottom-placed Morocco lock horns in Moscow, with both sides looking for their first win.
Portugal got their WC campaign underway with a dramatic, hard-fought 3-3 draw against 2010 champions Spain last Friday. Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a hat-trick, including a fabulous 88th-minute free-kick goal, to earn his side a point and make it a night to forget for Spain goalkeeper David de Gea. Portugal now sit joint-second alongside Spain and two points off group leaders Iran.
Morocco, who are making their first WC finals appearance since 1998, saw a 18-game unbeaten run in all competitions come to an end on Friday with a 1-0 loss to Iran in the Group B opener. A last-gasp headed own goal by Aziz Bouhaddouz handed the Iranians their first WC victory in 20 years.
This clash will be just the second-ever meeting between these sides and the first since 1986, when Morocco beat Portugal 3-1 in the group stages of the WC, held in México.
Players to watch: 21-year-old attacking midfielder Gonçalo Guedes has been in fine form recently. He netted a brace in Portugal’s final WC warm-up game against Algeria and provided the assist for Ronaldo’s second goal against Spain.
Ajax star Hakim Ziyech has nine goals to his name in 19 appearances for Morocco. Ziyech last got on the scoresheet in the 3-1 friendly win over Estonia on June 9.
Stat attack: Portugal have failed to score more than three goals in any of their last 11 games.
Morocco haven’t conceded more than once in their past 20 games, since a 2-1 loss to the Netherlands in May last year.
Portugal’s all-time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo (84 goals in 151 appearances) averages a goal every 142 minutes for the national team.
