It will be a case of déjà vu for Newcastle and Tottenham this weekend as they open their Premier League (PL) campaigns against each other for the second-straight season and third time in six years!
After a sticky patch in November and December last season, Newcastle recovered after Christmas to finish a respectable tenth, despite the financial restraints on coach Rafael Benítez.
That situation remains at Newcastle and the lack of investment in the team could be seen pre-season with just one win in five games, the last three of which saw them fail to score.
Newcastle won just one of their final five PL games last season but at home they have lost just once in their last nine (W5, D3, L1).
Tottenham enter the new season under pressure – financially due to their new stadium and to break their ten-year trophy drought.
After just one defeat in their last ten away PL games (W6, D3, L1), and a 2-0 victory here last season, Tottenham will feel confident. However, they have struggled in August under Mauricio Pochettino and have a 1.4 points average per game low in this month in his four years in charge.
Players to watch: World Cup Golden Boot winner Harry Kane has scored 139 PL goals in the last four seasons, but has yet to score in August in 13 attempts!
With just seven goals for WBA last season, can new loan signing Salomón Rondón be the striker that Newcastle desperately needs?
Stat attack: Thirteen of Newcastle’s 19 PL home games last season saw just one side score.
Newcastle haven’t won an opening day fixture since 2012/13 when they beat Tottenham 2-1 at home.
These teams last played out a 0-0 draw 77 games ago, back in August 1971.
Nine of the last ten H2H meetings here have seen over 1.5 goals in the second-half.
